If the Chili Peppers gave me confidence behind a microphone, CBS 6 taught me everything that happens behind the camera, the real foundation of storytelling in sports.
I walked into CBS 6 Sports as an intern excited but unsure of what to expect. What I found was one of the most meaningful learning experiences of my career. From day one, my mentor pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, learn quickly, and understand how a professional newsroom operates.
I learned how to write stories with clarity, energy, and intention, not just reporting what happened, but shaping it into something viewers would care about. I learned how to shoot football, capturing the speed, emotion, and intensity of Friday Night lights. Not just getting footage, but getting the right shots: clean, fast, steady, and full of action.
I spent time working on-set, figuring out the logistics of a broadcast, watching how producers made split-second decisions, and eventually learning how to make those decisions myself. By the end of the internship, I wasn’t just assisting, I was trusted to help produce the entire 11pm newscast, pulling together everything I had learned over the semester.
It wasn’t always easy. It was real, fast-paced, challenging, and sometimes a little intimidating, exactly what a newsroom is supposed to be. But it was also supportive, encouraging, and filled with people who wanted me to grow.
My mentor in particular made all the difference. They taught me how to think like a storyteller, how to shoot like a professional, and how to believe in my own voice. They showed me what strong sports journalism looks like, and more importantly, how much work and heart goes into doing it well. He taught me that a passion for the craft is necessary to make it in this business and I found that passion in this internship.
My time at CBS 6 is still one of the best professional experiences I’ve had. It gave me skills I use in every sports role I take on, writing, producing, shooting, editing, communicating. This job showed me the power of great mentorship and how far that can take you.
Most importantly, it reminded me why I love this industry:
Athletes stories deserve to be told well — and I want to be one of the people who tells them.
